Monticello's population is 1,726 and is the county seat of Lawrence County. The town has 754 housing units; land area of 3.25 sq. miles; a water area of 0.09 sq. miles; and a population density of 530.36 people per sq. mile for Census 2000.

Places to See:
The Lawrence County Civic Center and Museum is a stately old building in Monticello. It is filled with relics, antiques and history from many years ago reaching into the present days. There is a large and elegant room upstairs that is available for parties and celebrations. Contact 601-587-2412 well in advance to book the meeting room.

Another historic attraction in Monticello is the Longino House, home of former Mississippi Governor Andrew Longino. It's a unique glimpse into early twentieth century Mississippi. Longino House is listed among the National Register of Historic Places in Mississippi.

Come enjoy Monticello and the beautiful Pearl River. Visit Atwood Park on the River and enjoy camping (rent a camper in the park) boating, fishing. A new walking trail is being completed and a new boat dock. The park includes an outdoor stage where Montipaloosa and other festivals are held. Atwood Park is owned and operated by the town of Monticello.
